The Drive
The Eagle County airport is a few minutes from the interstate. From the terminal the vehicle joins I-70 eastbound at the Eagle and Gypsum exit, mile marker 140, and the whole trip from there is one road heading upvalley toward Vail. There are no passes, no tunnel and no summit. The road climbs gradually the entire way, following the Eagle River through the lower valley past the town of Eagle and then through the narrower stretch of the valley toward Avon.
The Avon and Beaver Creek exit at mile 167 is the landmark that tells you the trip is two-thirds done. Beyond Avon the valley tightens again, and the interstate runs along the creek into West Vail, then reaches the main Vail exit at 176 for Vail Village and Lionshead, and East Vail at exit 180 for the neighborhoods at the top of the valley below Vail Pass.
Because the road stays in the valley, this route is far less exposed than the drive from Denver. That said, it is a mountain road at altitude and it has its own winter character. The stretch between Eagle and Avon is open ranch country where wind and blowing snow reduce visibility. Closer to Vail the road sits in the shade of the canyon walls for much of a winter day, and ice lingers in the shaded curves after the sun has cleared everything else. Holiday weekend traffic thickens near the Vail exits in the late afternoon as day skiers and arriving guests converge on the same two ramps.
Drive time in good conditions is about 40 minutes from the terminal to a Vail Village hotel. In active snow or on a peak weekend, plan on 45 minutes to an hour. Even on the slowest winter day, the transfer from EGE is a fraction of the drive from Denver, which is the reason many Vail regulars build their trip around this airport.
When the Road Closes
The two closures that dominate winter travel to Vail from Denver, the Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail Pass, are both east of Vail and do not sit on this route at all. A closure on Vail Pass has no effect on a car coming up the valley from Eagle. I-70 between Eagle and Vail closes rarely, usually for a serious crash rather than weather, and when it does the closures are typically short.
The rule worth knowing is that the Colorado Traction Law covers this entire route. The law applies from September 1 through May 31 on I-70 between Morrison at mile marker 259 and Dotsero at mile marker 133, and the airport exit at mile 140 is inside that stretch. On a storm day the state can enforce the requirement for AWD or 4WD with proper winter, all-weather or mud-and-snow tread, or chains or traction devices. The weather risk on this route is at the airport rather than on the road. EGE is a mountain airport with fewer flights than Denver, and inbound flights are more often delayed, held or diverted when conditions are marginal. We track your flight from departure. If it diverts, we rebuild the pickup around wherever you actually land, including a pickup at Denver International if that is where the airline sends you. If it cancels and you rebook for the next morning, the reservation moves with you.
Where We Meet You
Eagle County Regional Airport has a single terminal, which makes meeting your chauffeur simple. You have two options, and we ask you to pick one when you book.
The first is a name-sign meet inside the terminal at baggage claim. Your chauffeur is standing at the carousel when you walk in from the gate, takes the bags as they come off, and walks you out to the vehicle. This is the choice for first-time visitors, families with children, groups arriving together and anyone who would rather not think about where to go after a flight.
The second is a curbside meet at the ground transportation lot outside Door 6. Walk out with your bags and the vehicle is waiting in the lot a few steps from the door. Regulars who know the terminal often prefer this because it skips the walk back through the building and gets them on the road a minute or two sooner.
In either case your flight has been tracked, so your chauffeur is in position for the actual arrival time. If the airplane is held on the ground at your origin for weather at EGE, which happens on winter mornings, the pickup moves with it and there is nothing you need to do. The chauffeur handles every bag, including ski bags and oversize items, from the carousel to the cargo area.
Where We Drop Off
Vail Village and Lionshead are pedestrian villages, and a car arriving from the west reaches them by the frontage roads that run along either side of the interstate. Hotels have their own loading zones and porte-cocheres, and our chauffeurs use them daily: the Four Seasons at the entrance to Vail Village, the Sonnenalp on the village side, The Arrabelle and the Vail Marriott in Lionshead, the Grand Hyatt Vail and Hotel Talisa on the western side of town, and The Sebastian near the village core. Your bags go from the vehicle to the bell staff at the door.
East Vail, at the top of the valley, is a neighborhood of private homes and condominiums along Gore Creek, and West Vail, at the bottom of town, has its own mix of residences and lodging. Both are served door to door. When you book, give us the address and any gate code, driveway or unit instructions, and your chauffeur will bring the vehicle to the entrance.
Beyond lodging, we drop at the Vail Village and Lionshead ski bases, at restaurants and private clubs, and at event venues for weddings, festivals and conferences. For an event, we can coordinate the drop point with your planner in advance so the arrival is handled without a phone call from the back seat.
Vehicles for This Route
On a 40-minute transfer the vehicle matters less for endurance and more for fit, so tell us exactly who and what is coming. The 2025 Cadillac Escalade and the 2026 Chevrolet Suburban each seat up to five passengers with a week’s luggage inside and skis or snowboards in a rooftop carrier. They are the usual choice for couples, families of four or five, and executives traveling with an assistant.
Groups of six or more move to the 2025 Mercedes-Benz Executive Sprinter, which seats up to 13 with skis and boards inside the cabin, or the 2025 Ford Transit, which seats up to 14 and carries gear the same way. These are the vehicles for corporate teams landing on the same flight, wedding parties and multi-family ski weeks. The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is available by request for guests who want it.
Every vehicle is AWD or 4WD on winter tires, with Wi-Fi and bottled water on board. Child seats are provided on request in rear-facing, forward-facing and booster configurations and are installed before the vehicle leaves for the airport. When you book, tell us the passenger count, the number of checked bags, how many pairs of skis or boards you are bringing, and which child seats you need. We assign the vehicle to the party, and we would rather send a Sprinter than squeeze six people into an SUV.
Your Return Trip to the Airport
The drive back to EGE is short, but the airport itself deserves respect. EGE has fewer flights than Denver, and a missed departure may mean a wait for the next one. Take the 40-minute drive, add 30 minutes of winter margin, and then add whatever your airline recommends for check-in with ski bags. In practice most guests leave Vail about two hours before a winter departure and a little less in summer.
Westbound I-70 from Vail to Eagle is not the direction the Sunday afternoon crowd is heading, so return timing here is about the airport, not the road. Your chauffeur checks the flight status before leaving for the pickup; if your departure is delayed, we adjust the pickup rather than leaving you to wait in the terminal. Drop-off is at the terminal curb, with bags unloaded by the chauffeur.
Private Car vs Shared Shuttle vs Rideshare vs Rental
The short drive from Eagle changes the calculation. On a two-hour trip from Denver, comfort and reliability over the passes carry the argument. From EGE the drive is under an hour, so the question is mostly about the beginning and the end of it.
Shared shuttles serve EGE and stop at multiple hotels in Avon, Beaver Creek and Vail. A 40-minute drive with three stops before yours is still a reasonable trip, but you wait for the van to fill and you may be the last drop. For a group with skis and children the loading and unloading at each stop adds up.
Rideshare availability at a small mountain airport is thin, especially at the times most flights land, and it is thinner still in snow. Drivers who accept a ride to Vail may be in vehicles that do not meet the traction law. For the trip back to EGE, summoning a driver to a Vail hotel at 5 a.m. is not a plan you want your flight to depend on.
A rental car is the strongest alternative on this route because the drive is easy. It suits guests who will move around the valley every day. Against it, weigh the counter time after landing, the traction-law question, winter parking in the pedestrian villages and the fact that Vail is designed for walking and lifts, not driving.
