Driving Support for Your Protective Detail

Summit Black Car supplies security drivers to protective details operating in Colorado: family offices, corporate security teams and touring productions that travel with their own detail lead and need a driver who can carry out the vehicle portion of the plan on mountain roads. We are based in Breckenridge, and our founder is a former Colorado State Trooper who later worked in executive protection. Our chauffeurs live in the mountain towns they drive, and the driving is the one part of a Colorado movement that an out-of-state team cannot easily bring with it.

The service runs 24 hours a day, every day, across Denver, its commercial and private aviation airports, the I-70 corridor, and Summit, Eagle and Pitkin Counties. The security driver takes direction from the detail lead, handles route selection, loading and timing, and keeps the detail informed while the vehicle is moving. What a Security Driver Does

A security driver is the member of a protective detail who is responsible for the vehicle. The detail lead decides where the principal goes, when, and with whom. The driver makes sure the vehicle is where the plan says it will be, that the route chosen is the route driven, that the principal is loaded and unloaded the way the detail has set up, and that the detail knows where the vehicle is in between.

That is a narrower job than the one on our executive protection page. A family office or corporate security team traveling with its own agents does not need a second protective program. It needs a driver who fits into the one it already has and knows the roads.

In a typical movement our driver owns:

  • Vehicle readiness: fuel, tires, winter equipment and a check before every leg.
  • Route selection: the primary route, the alternates and the decision points, agreed with the detail lead in advance.
  • Loading and unloading: staging so the principal’s walk is short and the exit is clear, and holding until the detail calls the move.
  • Timing: leaving with margin and adjusting when the schedule changes.
  • Communication: status to the detail lead by the method and at the intervals the detail wants.

How We Plan a Movement

Planning starts with the detail lead. We ask for the schedule, the number of vehicles, the load order, the communication method and channel, the terminology the team uses, preferred hold points, and any venue the advance team has already checked. We work from the detail’s movement plan, or build the vehicle portion and hand it back for approval.

Route selection is the driver’s main contribution. Between Denver and the resorts there is effectively one road, I-70, with a short list of places where it stops: Floyd Hill, the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel at 11,158 feet, Vail Pass at 10,662 feet, and Glenwood Canyon between mile markers 116 and 133. For Breckenridge, if I-70 closes east of the tunnel, the alternate is US-285 to Fairplay and Highway 9 north over Hoosier Pass at 11,542 feet. For Vail and points west there is no short alternate, so the plan names a hold location instead of a detour of several hundred miles.

Staging is the second contribution. In the pedestrian villages and gated resorts, where a vehicle can wait, how it gets back out, and which entrance a hotel uses are things our drivers already know.

The plan ends with a short brief: who the driver reports to, what gets called and when, and what the driver does if contact is lost.

Airports, FBOs and Venues

FBO arrivals are the simplest part of a Colorado movement to plan. At Eagle County Regional the Vail Valley Jet Center is the FBO, with Signature Aviation and NetJets operating there. Atlantic Aviation serves Aspen/Pitkin County. At Denver International the FBO is Signature; Centennial (APA) and Rocky Mountain Metropolitan (BJC) also serve the Front Range. The driver confirms the tail number with the FBO and positions the vehicle before the aircraft is on the ground.

At DIA, prearranged vehicles stage on Level 5 of the Jeppesen Terminal at Island 2, and the driver cannot wait at the curb; the vehicle is released from the holding lot when the party is ready. For a protected principal, an agent, or our own second person on request, meets the party at baggage claim and calls the vehicle forward as the party walks to the door.

At EGE the driver meets the party inside at baggage claim or at the ground transportation lot outside Door 6. At ASE, pickups use the Ground Transportation Circle outside baggage claim. ASE is closed to all commercial and general aviation from April 4, 2027 to November 19, 2027 for construction, so Aspen movements in that window arrive at EGE, about an hour and a half away, or at DIA. Weather diversions from ASE commonly land at EGE, Grand Junction or Rifle.

Venues on the corridor include the Keystone Conference Center, Beaver Run in Breckenridge, the Aspen Institute campus at Aspen Meadows, Ford Park in Vail, and Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Morrison.

Mountain Resorts, Events and Private Residences

Vail Village and Lionshead are closed to general traffic, so a movement to the Four Seasons, Sonnenalp, The Arrabelle, Hotel Talisa, Grand Hyatt Vail or The Sebastian uses the specific loading zone or porte-cochere for that building. East Vail and West Vail residences are door to door.

Beaver Creek is gated, and Bachelor Gulch and Arrowhead have separate gates. Vehicle access is arranged in advance. The Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch, Park Hyatt Beaver Creek, The Osprey and The Pines Lodge each take vehicles at a defined point.

Breckenridge is our home base. One Ski Hill Place, Grand Colorado on Peak 8 and Beaver Run sit at the ski bases, and the residences on Peaks 7, 8 and 9 sit on steep, snow-packed private roads where a driver needs to know the turnaround before committing to the driveway.

Aspen and Snowmass Village combine the highest density of private residences with the busiest event calendar in our area: The Little Nell, Hotel Jerome, the St. Regis, The Limelight, W Aspen and Aspen Meadows in the core; the Viceroy, Limelight Snowmass and Westin Snowmass in Base Village; private homes in the West End and on the ski-in/ski-out slopes. The Food & Wine Classic and the X Games at Buttermilk bring street closures, and Highway 82 is the single winter road in and out.

A touring production moving through Red Rocks, the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater and a resort stay needs the same driver across the run, separate vehicle plans for the artist and the crew, and load-in and load-out timing set by the venue; we assign a lead driver to the production’s security lead for the Colorado dates.

Vehicles for Security Driving

The principal vehicle is a 2025 Cadillac Escalade or a 2026 Chevrolet Suburban, carrying the principal and up to four others, usually one or two agents and a family member or executive. Both are AWD or 4WD on winter tires and meet the Colorado Traction Law every day of the season, with Wi-Fi and a cabin quiet enough for calls.

The support element rides in the 2025 Mercedes-Benz Executive Sprinter, up to thirteen passengers, or the 2025 Ford Transit, up to fourteen. These carry additional agents, staff, family, luggage and equipment on the same route and timing as the principal vehicle. Skis and boards ride inside the Sprinter and Transit; the SUVs carry them on rooftop carriers. The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is available by request as the principal vehicle.

For a two-vehicle movement, the drivers stay in contact with each other and the detail lead, and one is designated lead for timing. Child seats are provided on request. Passenger counts are firm limits, so give us the head count, luggage and gear when the movement is booked.

Timing, Advance Work and Multi-Day Details

A single movement from an FBO to a residence can be arranged with a few days’ notice. A multi-day detail with several venues, private residences and a support element is best booked a week or more ahead so the drivers can run the routes and confirm gate access and venue staging.

The same drivers stay on a detail from arrival to departure, so the brief is given once and the drivers know the residence’s driveway in the dark by the second night.

Timing rules built into every plan:

  • Departures to DIA use the drive time plus 30 to 45 minutes of winter weather margin plus the airline’s check-in time, with more on Sunday afternoons and holiday Mondays, when eastbound I-70 is at its slowest.
  • The tunnel, Vail Pass and, on Aspen movements, Glenwood Canyon are checked before departure, with a hold point for each.
  • Flight tracking runs on every airport pickup, and the driver adjusts to the actual arrival without a call from the detail.

Itineraries are held by the assigned drivers and the person who booked the movement, and we follow the detail’s rules on what may be written down or sent by text.

Why Law Enforcement Experience Matters on Mountain Roads

A detail lead who hires a local driver is buying judgment about a road the team does not know. Our founder worked I-70 as a Colorado State Trooper before moving into executive protection, and our drivers have law enforcement or military backgrounds. That produces a driver who has been on the working side of a closure, not just stuck in one.

A trooper learns how a closure unfolds: a crash on the tunnel approach, lanes blocked, traffic metered at the portals, a full closure for a storm or a hazmat hold, then a reopening whose time nobody can promise. A driver who has worked those scenes can tell a detail lead what a closure at a given point usually means for the next two hours, so the detail can decide whether to hold or change the day.

It also produces a particular way of driving. Following distance on a snow-packed grade, lane position through the tunnel, and where ice forms on the shaded curves above Georgetown are things a trooper learned by responding to the crashes other drivers had there.

Finally, it produces a driver who is comfortable inside a team. Our drivers have worked under a chain of command, used a radio, and given and taken direction in a moving situation.
