The Drive
From the terminal your chauffeur heads west across Denver to I-70 and starts the climb. The road rises over Floyd Hill and into the canyon at Idaho Springs, then continues up through Georgetown as the valley narrows and the grade gets serious. This is the part of the trip where Denver weather ends and mountain weather begins, and the difference between the two is often the whole story of your drive time.
The Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel carries I-70 under the Continental Divide at 11,158 feet. Trucks chain up on the approach in winter, and the tunnel is the single point on the route where a crash or a hazmat hold can stop everything at once. On the west side the road descends quickly into Summit County, and the very first exit in the valley is yours: Silverthorne/Dillon, exit 205.
That early exit is what makes Keystone the shortest DIA-to-resort drive. Guests headed to Breckenridge, Copper Mountain or Vail keep going on the interstate; you leave it and turn east on US-6. The road follows Lake Dillon for about 8 miles, through the town of Dillon and along the water, before the valley closes in and you reach the resort. In winter the lake freezes and the wind coming across it can put a glaze on US-6 in the early morning; in summer it is one of the more pleasant stretches of road in the county. Either way it is a two-lane road with local traffic, and it rewards a driver who knows it.
The seasonal hazards here are the ones that come with I-70 plus a few of Keystone’s own. The Colorado Traction Law applies on I-70 between Morrison and Dotsero from September 1 through May 31, so the entire mountain section of this route is covered every winter. US-6 east of Dillon is not part of the interstate, but it is a mountain road with the same ice and drifting snow, and we run the same AWD or 4WD vehicles and winter tires on it. Holiday weekends bring heavy westbound traffic on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings that can double the time between Georgetown and the tunnel. The 1 hour 40 minute figure is for a clear day; we quote a window that fits your actual date and time.
When the Road Closes
The exposure on the Keystone transfer is the Eisenhower Tunnel and the I-70 corridor east of it. Both close for storms, crashes and hazmat holds, and when they do, the traffic to every Summit County resort stops together. Because Keystone is the first resort past the tunnel, a reopening gets you moving again sooner than guests bound for Vail or Aspen, and for most short holds the right move is to wait at a safe location and let CDOT clear the road.
For a long closure there is a southern alternate: US-285 southwest to Fairplay, Highway 9 north over Hoosier Pass at 11,542 feet into Breckenridge, then Swan Mountain Road across to Keystone. It adds a good deal of distance and crosses a high pass of its own, so it is a judgment call the chauffeur makes with live CDOT information rather than an automatic detour. We tell you what we are doing before we do it, and we do not leave you sitting in a closed lane wondering.
The traction law runs September 1 through May 31 on I-70 between Morrison and Dotsero: AWD or 4WD with at least 3/16-inch tread on winter, all-weather or M+S tires, or chains or an approved traction device. Our SUVs and Sprinters are equipped for it every day of the season, so a chain-law call is a delay for other drivers, not a stop for you.
Where We Meet You
Pre-arranged pickups at Denver International happen on Level 5 of Jeppesen Terminal, at Island 2, under the LIMO signs. The doors that put you closest are 505 to 507 and 511 to 513 on the east side, and 504 to 506 and 510 to 512 on the west side. Our advice is to keep it simple: once you have your bags, walk out Door 511 if you are on the east side or Door 506 on the west side, and cross over to Island 2.
DIA does not allow chauffeurs to idle at the curb, so your vehicle waits in a nearby holding lot. Send us a text when you have your bags, or check in with us, and the vehicle is released and pulls up at Island 2 within a few minutes. Flight tracking is standard on every airport pickup, so a late arrival is handled without a call from you; the chauffeur is already adjusting before you land.
Families with young children, guests arriving late at night, and first-time DIA travelers often prefer to be met inside. An inside-terminal meet-and-greet at baggage claim is available on request; your chauffeur waits at your carousel, helps with the bags, and walks you out to the vehicle. Ask for it when you book so we schedule the extra time.
Where We Drop Off
Keystone spreads out along the valley more than Breckenridge does, and where you stay shapes the last few minutes of the drive. River Run Village is the main base village and the drop point for most of our Keystone guests. Lakeside Village sits near the water and the Keystone Lodge & Spa, a quieter setting a few minutes from the lifts. The Mountain House base has its own cluster of condos and lodging, and Keystone Ranch is served door to door as well. Private homes and condos throughout the resort are all on our map.
Give us the exact property name and unit or the street address when you book, along with any gate code, check-in desk location or key-pickup instructions. Many Keystone rentals have a separate check-in office from the unit itself, and knowing that in advance means the chauffeur takes you to the right door first.
Keystone is about 15 minutes from Breckenridge via Swan Mountain Road, which makes split-group trips simple. If half of your party is staying in Breckenridge, or you are landing at Keystone and heading to dinner on Main Street the same night, tell us at booking and we build it into the plan.
Vehicles for This Route
Keystone draws families, so the vehicle question on this route is usually about car seats and gear rather than raw headcount. The 2025 Cadillac Escalade seats five and carries luggage for a family of four or five with a rooftop ski carrier for the boards and skis. The 2026 Chevrolet Suburban also seats five and offers more cargo room, which is the right call when a family arrives with full ski bags, boot bags and a stroller.
For ski weeks with grandparents, cousins and friends, the 2025 Mercedes-Benz Executive Sprinter seats up to 13 and the 2025 Ford Transit seats up to 14. Both carry skis and boards inside the vehicle, so nothing rides on the roof through the tunnel. A Rolls-Royce Cullinan is available by request for guests who want it.
Every vehicle has AWD or 4WD, winter tires, Wi-Fi and bottled water, and the chauffeur handles the loading. Child seats are on request; give us the ages and we install them before pickup. When you request a quote, tell us the number of passengers, the number of checked bags, how many sets of skis or snowboards are coming, and how many child seats you need. We assign the vehicle to match the party rather than guessing, and we never promise room that a vehicle does not have.
Your Return Trip to the Airport
The trip back to DIA from Keystone is the shortest resort return we run, but it still points east on I-70, and eastbound I-70 on a Sunday afternoon or a holiday Monday is the slowest traffic of the week. The backup can start on US-6 before you even reach the interstate on a busy departure day. Plan the pickup by adding the drive time, 30 to 45 minutes of winter weather margin, and your airline’s check-in time. On a quiet midweek morning, 1 hour 40 minutes plus the margin is plenty; on a stormy Sunday, budget closer to 2 hours 45 minutes for the drive alone.
When you book the return we recommend a pickup time based on the flight, the day and the forecast. Early morning departures are routine, and we track outbound flights too, so if your departure is delayed we move the pickup later rather than deliver you to DIA hours early.
Private Car vs Shared Shuttle vs Rideshare vs Rental
Keystone’s short distance from DIA narrows the time gap between the options, but it does not narrow the reliability gap.
A shared shuttle runs on its own schedule, not yours, and typically stops at other Summit County resorts and lodges along the way. The direct 1 hour 40 minute drive stretches with each stop, and if your flight lands between departures you wait. For a solo traveler with a single bag it can be fine; for a family with skis it rarely is.
Rideshare works well inside Denver and less well 96 miles from it. The driver who accepts the trip may never have driven US-6 in winter, may or may not be in a traction-law vehicle, and once at Keystone has little reason to stay in the area. That last point matters for the return: finding a rideshare at Keystone before dawn for an early flight is not something we would count on.
A rental car makes sense if you plan to drive around Summit County every day. The cost of that freedom is driving I-70 and the tunnel yourself, in whatever the day brings, and meeting the traction law with the vehicle the counter hands you. Many guests find they use a rental to drive from the airport and back and nowhere else.
