The Drive
The EGE to Aspen drive is the western half of the Denver to Aspen corridor without the eastern half. There is no Eisenhower Tunnel and no Vail Pass on this route, which is a large part of why the drive is about 1 hour 30 minutes rather than four. What remains is one canyon and one valley.
From the terminal your chauffeur joins I-70 at the Eagle and Gypsum interchange, exit 140, and heads west. The interstate follows the river downstream past Dotsero at mile marker 133, and from there to mile marker 116 the road threads Glenwood Canyon. The canyon is the defining feature of this route. Its walls are steep and prone to rockfall, and after heavy rain the drainages above the highway can send mud and debris onto the road. Closures happen, and they can last hours. Your chauffeur checks canyon status before leaving for the airport and again before leaving the terminal.
At Glenwood Springs, exit 116, the vehicle leaves I-70 and turns southeast onto Highway 82. This is about 40 miles of state highway through the Roaring Fork Valley, and it is a different kind of driving from the interstate. The highway passes through Carbondale and then Basalt, with traffic signals, local commuters and, on weekends, a steady flow of skiers heading the same direction you are. Winter mornings and late afternoons are the slower periods. About 5 miles before Aspen you pass Brush Creek Road, which climbs to Snowmass Village, and then Highway 82 delivers you into Aspen.
Because the whole route lies west of the high passes, weather on this drive is usually valley weather: rain or snow on the road rather than a closed summit. Snow still falls hard in the valley, and Highway 82 on a storm afternoon needs a vehicle with winter tires and a driver who knows where the road ices first.
East of Aspen, Highway 82 continues over Independence Pass, but the pass closes every winter, usually in the first week of November, and reopens the Thursday before Memorial Day. It has no bearing on an EGE transfer, which always arrives from the Glenwood Springs side.
When the Road Closes
The one closure that matters on this route is Glenwood Canyon. When the canyon shuts for rockfall or a mudslide, there is no short way from Eagle to Glenwood Springs, and the long alternates add hours. Our practice is to hold rather than detour. Your chauffeur stays with you in Eagle or Gypsum, or continues to a comfortable stop in Glenwood Springs if the closure is on the far side, watches the reopening estimate and moves the moment the road opens. If a closure is already in place when your flight lands, we tell you before you leave the terminal so you can decide whether to wait at the airport or at a restaurant.
The seasonal Colorado Traction Law runs on I-70 from Morrison at mile marker 259 to Dotsero at mile marker 133, from September 1 to May 31, and requires AWD or 4WD with 3/16 inch of tread on winter, all-weather or M+S tires, or chains or approved traction devices. The EGE interchange at mile marker 140 sits inside that zone, so the first miles of this trip are covered by it. Beyond Dotsero and on Highway 82 the road conditions are the same or worse, and we run the same winter-equipped AWD SUVs and Sprinters on every mile of the route regardless of where the law’s boundary falls.
Where We Meet You
Eagle County Regional Airport has a single terminal, which makes the meet easy. Your chauffeur waits inside at baggage claim, helps with the bags as they come off the belt, and walks you out to the vehicle. If you would rather step outside, the ground transportation lot is directly outside Door 6, and we can meet you there instead. Tell us your preference when you book.
We track every inbound flight to EGE. Winter service at Eagle is built on nonstop flights from many hubs, but the airport has fewer flights than Denver and is more sensitive to weather, so schedule changes and holds are part of the routine. When your flight is delayed, your chauffeur adjusts and there is nothing for you to do. When a flight bound for Aspen diverts to Eagle, which is one of the common diversion airports along with Grand Junction and Rifle, call us from the ground and we will reroute the pickup to EGE.
Private aviation arrives at the Vail Valley Jet Center, the FBO at EGE, where Signature Aviation and NetJets operate. For jet arrivals we meet at the FBO entrance with the vehicle positioned for a direct load, and we can be there before wheels down when we have your tail number and estimated arrival.
Where We Drop Off
Most EGE to Aspen transfers end at a hotel in the Aspen core: The Little Nell, Hotel Jerome, the St. Regis, The Limelight, W Aspen and Aspen Meadows are the regular stops, and the chauffeur pulls to the entrance and turns the bags over to the bell staff. Guests staying at Aspen Highlands are dropped at the base area or their residence there. The West End and other Aspen neighborhoods are served door to door.
Because Snowmass Village lies on Brush Creek Road about 5 miles before Aspen, a party with guests in both places can be dropped in sequence on a single transfer, Snowmass first and Aspen second, without doubling back. Mention both addresses when you book.
For groups arriving on an Aspen-bound flight that diverted to Eagle, we drop at the same Aspen addresses you would have reached from Aspen’s own airport, only about 1 hour 30 minutes later than planned. If your lodging is in Basalt or Carbondale, those towns are on the route and we stop there on the way.
Vehicles for This Route
Parties of up to five ride in the Cadillac Escalade or Chevrolet Suburban. Both are AWD with winter tires, both carry skis on rooftop carriers, and the Suburban has the edge when there is more luggage than seats in use. For a shorter transfer like this one, the Escalade is the usual assignment.
Groups of six to fourteen ride in the Mercedes-Benz Executive Sprinter, which seats 13, or the Ford Transit, which seats 14. Skis and boards go inside these vehicles. Eagle is a popular arrival point for private aviation groups and corporate parties, and the Sprinter’s executive cabin is a natural fit for a team arriving together at the Jet Center.
The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is available on this route by request for guests who want an ultra-luxury arrival in Aspen.

Your Return Trip to the Airport
Returning to Eagle for a departure is a shorter exercise than a Denver run, but it still needs a margin. Allow the drive, about 1 hour 30 minutes in dry conditions and 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes in winter, then add 30 to 45 minutes of winter weather margin for Highway 82 and the canyon, and the check-in time your airline recommends at EGE. A closure in Glenwood Canyon on departure day is the scenario to plan around, and your chauffeur checks canyon status before leaving Aspen.
Sunday afternoons and holiday Mondays are the busiest departure periods, and Highway 82 through Basalt and Carbondale is slower then. We will propose a pickup time when you book, track your outbound flight, and adjust the pickup if the airline changes the schedule.
Private Car vs Shared Shuttle vs Rideshare vs Rental
Shared shuttles between Eagle and Aspen run on fixed schedules, make stops along Highway 82, and drop at a central point rather than your hotel entrance. If your flight is late, the shuttle may not be, and the next departure may be hours away.
Rideshare at EGE is sparse. The airport is small, the number of drivers waiting for a 70-mile fare to Aspen is low on a good day, and it is lower still when a diverted flight unloads an entire cabin of Aspen-bound passengers at once. The vehicle’s winter readiness is unknown until it arrives.
Renting a car at Eagle is a reasonable choice if you plan to drive during your stay. The trade-off is driving Glenwood Canyon and Highway 82 yourself after a flight, often in the dark in winter, and the need to confirm the rental meets the traction law. Many Aspen guests find they rarely use the car once in town.
