Winter Roads and Closures

The EGE leg into Beaver Creek stays on the valley floor and does not cross a pass, so it rarely closes. What it does have is the climb at the end: the resort road from Avon up to the village, and the roads on to Bachelor Gulch and Arrowhead, are steep, shaded and snow-covered for much of the winter. Our SUVs and vans are AWD or 4WD on winter tires and handle those grades every day of the season, and your chauffeur knows where the ice lingers.

Guests arriving from Denver depend on two chokepoints, the Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail Pass. The tunnel closes for storms, crashes and hazardous-materials holds; Vail Pass closes several times each winter. When Vail Pass shuts there is no short alternate, so the chauffeur holds at a safe point and moves as soon as it reopens rather than attempting a detour of hundreds of miles. Colorado’s traction law runs every year from September 1 to May 31 on I-70 between Morrison and Dotsero, which includes both the EGE and the DIA legs into Beaver Creek. It requires AWD or 4WD with adequate tread on winter, all-weather or M+S tires, or chains or approved traction devices. Every vehicle we send meets it.

Getting Around Beaver Creek Without a Rental Car

The village core is compact, and once you are in it most of the day happens on foot. The chauffeur comes into play for everything down the hill and along the valley. Vail Village and Lionshead are about 15 minutes east, close enough that dinner in Vail is an easy evening with a set pickup time and no drive back on a dark road afterward. Avon and Edwards have restaurants and grocery stores at the bottom of the hill, and a scheduled errand run with the car waiting is simpler than a taxi each way.

Family ski weeks are the classic Beaver Creek booking. A morning drop at ski school, a lunch pickup for grandparents, an afternoon trip to Vail for one part of the family and a quiet return for the rest: an hourly chauffeur makes those pieces fit without anyone shuttling. For a change of mountain, Vail is 15 minutes away and Breckenridge a little over an hour east over Vail Pass, with Copper Mountain on the way. We drop at the base, hold street shoes and layers in the vehicle if you like, and collect you at the time you set.

Beaver Creek hosts weddings at its hotels and private homes, and event weekends such as the Birds of Prey World Cup fill the valley with visitors. For weddings we assign a Sprinter or Transit to move guests between Avon lodging and the venue on a schedule, and we recommend booking event weekends early. Summer brings concerts, golf and hiking across the valley, and an hourly booking covers a full day of moving between them.

Planning Your Departure from Beaver Creek

For an EGE departure, allow the 30-minute drive, or 35 to 50 minutes in winter, plus the check-in time your airline recommends. EGE is a single terminal with short distances inside, so early-morning flights are workable with a pre-dawn pickup, which we run routinely. For a DIA departure, add the 2 hour 15 minute drive, 30 to 45 minutes of winter weather margin and your airline’s check-in window, which usually means leaving Beaver Creek about four hours before a winter flight. Sunday afternoons and holiday Mondays are the slowest eastbound periods on I-70, so an earlier pickup or a morning departure makes those days easier. Your chauffeur checks conditions before pickup and will propose an earlier time if a storm is forecast. Give us your flight number when booking and we will suggest the pickup time.
